Plugin & Theme Update Management

We test and apply your WordPress plugin and theme updates on a schedule — catching the ones that break layouts, forms, or checkout before they ever reach your live site.

Why updates need a process, not one click

Updating plugins matters — outdated ones are the most common way WordPress sites get hacked. But hitting "update all" on a live site is how pages suddenly go blank or a contact form quietly stops sending.

The fix is a process: back up first, apply updates on a safe copy, check the pages that matter, then push to live.

  • Full backup taken before any update is applied
  • Updates tested on a staging copy, not directly on your live site
  • Key pages checked afterward — home, checkout, forms, main templates
  • Changelogs and compatibility reviewed before major version jumps
  • Rollback ready the moment an update causes a problem
  • A record of what was updated and when

Handling the updates that fight each other

Sometimes an update to one plugin breaks another, or a premium plugin needs a valid license to update at all. We manage those dependencies — licenses, load order, known conflicts.

When an update can't be applied safely, we tell you why and lay out the options instead of forcing it and hoping.

  • Track premium plugin licenses so paid security updates keep flowing
  • Identify conflicts between plugins and your theme before visitors hit them
  • Hold or replace abandoned plugins that are no longer safe to run
  • Flag updates that need code changes rather than a simple version bump
  • Protect theme customizations with child themes so updates don't wipe them

How we schedule it

Most sites do best on a regular cadence — often weekly or every couple of weeks — with security patches applied faster. We handle it in the background so you're always reasonably current without your team touching the dashboard.

It's usually part of a monthly care plan; a free consultation gets you one sized to your site.

  • Regular cadence for routine updates, faster turnaround for security fixes
  • Reports so you can see the site is being kept current
  • Pairs naturally with backups and uptime monitoring in one plan
  • Cadence tuned to how many plugins and how much custom code you run

Frequently asked questions

Why not just turn on automatic updates?

Automatic updates are fine for minor security patches, but for major versions they're a gamble — the update installs unattended and you find out it broke checkout when a customer emails you. Testing first catches those before they cost you a sale, which auto-updates by design can't do.

What happens when an update breaks something anyway?

Because we back up before every update and test on a copy first, most breaks are caught before they reach your visitors. If something slips through, we roll back immediately from the pre-update backup and diagnose it separately.

Do you handle both free and premium plugins?

Yes. Premium plugins need active licenses to receive updates, so we track those too and let you know before a license lapses and quietly cuts off your security patches.
