A smartwatch is not a small phone. Interactions are measured in seconds, the screen is tiny, and battery is precious. Good Wear OS apps do one or two things fast — check status, log something, control playback, glance at data — and get out of the way.
That constraint shapes everything: large touch targets, minimal text entry, and information you can read at a glance. We design Wear OS apps around the moments a user actually raises their wrist, not around a full phone feature set squeezed onto a circle.

The technical realities
Modern Wear OS is built with Compose for Wear OS, and apps can run standalone or pair with a phone companion app. Which model fits depends on whether the watch needs to work without the phone nearby and how much data and processing lives on-device.
Battery and connectivity drive the architecture. We're careful about background work, syncing, and sensor use, and we test on real hardware because watch performance and battery behavior are hard to judge from an emulator alone.

Does a Wear OS app need a phone app too?
Not necessarily. Wear OS supports standalone apps that work on their own, as well as apps paired with a phone companion. Which is right depends on whether your watch app needs the phone's data and processing. We'll help you decide during scoping.
Can my existing Android app just run on the watch?
No — a watch needs its own purpose-built experience because of the screen, input, and battery constraints. It can share your backend and data, but the on-watch app is designed separately for glanceable use.
Is Wear OS worth building for my product?
